A homeowner hired a contractor to perform repairs, for damage that was covered by insurance. The contractor billed more than the insurance company paid, but has agreed to take the insurance payment as settlement in full of the repair. The insurance check is made out jointly to the homeowner and contractor. The homeowner does not fully trust the contractor. How can the homeowner be certain that the contractor won't try to claim or collect more money if the homeowner signs the check over to the contractor?
