Default How to Protect Yourself When Settling a Bill for Home Repairs

A homeowner hired a contractor to perform repairs, for damage that was covered by insurance. The contractor billed more than the insurance company paid, but has agreed to take the insurance payment as settlement in full of the repair. The insurance check is made out jointly to the homeowner and contractor. The homeowner does not fully trust the contractor. How can the homeowner be certain that the contractor won't try to claim or collect more money if the homeowner signs the check over to the contractor?

Have the contractor issue an invoice that reflects the reduction of the bill to the amount paid by the insurer (or make a note to that effect on the existing invoice) and, upon endorsing and turning over the check, have them issue a receipt indicating that the account is "paid in full".
