Default What Promises Will Change You From Being an At-Will Employee

An employee in New York was promised by his employer that as long as he did a good job, he would move up. He was recently fired without explanation. Do the promises create a commitment that he can be fired only for cause, or is he still an at-will employee?

Under those facts, the promises are likely to be viewed as non-contractual instruction or coaching on how to advance within the organization. Unless there is a lot more to the story, it does not seem at all likely that the employer will be able to convince a court that the statement constituted a promise that he could only be fired for cause.
