Default Green Card Expired During an Extended Overseas Visit

I am a US Permanent Resident Card holder since 1986. My card expired 03/21/16
I returned to the UK in early June of 2015 to attend to some family matters, intending to return before my card expiry date.
Since then I have become completely occupied with the care of my Mother who is very old. My brother and sister, for different reasons, are currently unable to resume this responsibility.
I want to Know if there is any action open to me to re-enter and renew at some point, hope fully soon.
I've lived 30 years in the USA and now I am completely daunted at the prospect of starting an unexpected new life in England.

    Thank you

To clarify, have you been outside of the US since June 2015?

If that's the case you really should speak to a US immigration attorney to guide you further. It's not impossible to keep your status in extreme circumstances but it's not an easy road to travel and you'll need help.

My own clarification: it's not your green card you have to worry about (this is really little more than proof that you're a permanent resident - residency doesn't expire, only the card does. A bit like a state ID card). Your concern is that you have abandoned your residency.

Doggy is right. In retrospect, you should have done certain things before you were gone even six months from the US (reentry permit, etc)... You'll definitely need a lawyer.

On what basis was your residency obtained initially?

Dear Flyingron, thank you for responding. The original basis for my residency was marriage.
I am exasperated that I did not clearly see this coming and that my judgement was distracted. Perhaps I could find an attorney here in the UK. Would you have some advice.
