Default If You're Visibly Sick at Work Can Your Employer Still Require a Doctor's Note

An employee in Florida became very ill at work, and was obviously sick. She asked her manager if she could leave. He said that she could leave, but that as she was missing part of a scheduled shift she would need to provide a doctor's note. This is a food service job, so there was a potential hazard to diners. Can an employer require a doctor's note when they know a worker is sick?

Yes, the employer can require a doctor's note. It may not make sense for them to do so, and they don't have to require the note, but they can make it their policy to always require a doctor's note when an employee misses part or all of a shift due to illness.
