Breaking and entering is a very serious offense -- it is a felony punishable by up to ten years in prison. MCL 750.110. He needs to work with a criminal defense lawyer. Depending on his age, prior records and the facts of the case, he should be able to get a significant reduction in the charge, and there are special dispositions that may be available if he is a youthful offender (< the age of 21) that might allow him to avoid a conviction.
