    Default Can You Drop Charges if You Change Your Mind About Prosecuting

    If a friend attacks you and you call the police, can you later change your mind about prosecution and ask that charges be dropped? Now that tempers have cooled, the victim doesn't want her friend to have a criminal record or to risk jail time.

    Once charges are filed, you can make your preferences known to the prosecutor; but it's up to the prosecutor to decide whether or not to proceed with the charges.
