Default Apartment Lease Renewal With a Rent Increase

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Texas
My original apartment lease was for six months. Close to the end of the lease I spoke with the management team about renewing. They stated they weren't doing renewals at the time and would get back to me. After my lease expired, and continuing to pay my normal rent with no change for another six months, I finally recieved a renewal notice from my apartment. Including was a increase in the rent. Can they do that, after so long since my lease expired without previously offering me a renewal or honoring my requests for one?

Of course they can. What was your reason for believing that they might not be able to do so?

Unless the lease has a provision for automatic renewal, you are a month-to-month tenant. They can increase the rent or kick you out given a month's notice.
