Default Unauthorized Deductions from an Employee's Pay

An employee parked a company vehicle in front of his home and, while it was parked, it was sideswiped by another car. The employer has told the employee that he is liable for the $1,600 it will cost to repair the vehicle, and has started to take deductions from the employee's paycheck, $500 per pay period. The employee has not only been hit hard by losing $500 per week, he found out that the employer's insurance covered the repair cost. Were the employee's rights violated, under Maryland law?

The making of unauthorized deductions is a violation Maryland law, and the employee can potentially recover treble damages plus attorney fees. The employee should consult a lawyer about making a possible claim, but should also keep in mind that it would be sensible to change jobs before suing his employer.
