Default How to Begin the Divorce Process

A couple got married in California, then later moved to North Carolina where they have lived for the past eight years. They are still living together, but want to get a divorce. They have a jointly owned home, and no children, but they have a lot of debt. How can they start the divorce process?

Default Re: How to Begin the Divorce Process

First and foremost, they need to separate. They cannot start a divorce case in North Carolina while continuing to live together. Then they need to figure out how to divide the marital home and deal with the debts -- they can read some suggestions about the home here, and about credit card debt here. Then they need to decide if they're going to try to represent themselves (general information here), or get help from a lawyer.
