I was on .75 mg for over a decade. My doctor and I decided to take me off of it. It took me over six months to taper off by cutting those tiny pills into smaller and smaller slivers. It was hell on earth to go faster than that. I am not an outlier, either- many have had similar experiences. Xanax is not a benign drug. Read the product literature. In fact sudden (cold turkey) discontinuation can lead to seizures, rebound anxiety and skyrocketing blood pressure.

Perhaps you were not on it as long as I was, or the OP. The OP says he/she has been on it for several years. Length of time makes a big difference.
I must be special or something. Had to take >1mg /day for over 10 years. Decided to stop taking them. Did. No problem.

You were very fortunate. It's pretty dangerous to stop cold turkey. My dose was relatively low, and I had all the symptoms of discontinuation if I didn't taper according to my doctor's instructions.

The Op needs to find a regular doctor to prescribe his Xanax ASAP.. It is possible the OP may need to see a psychistrist since this to to treat anxiety. If the OP continues to see more than one doctor for the sole purpose of obtaining Xanax prescriptions, that may be considered Doctor Shopping. It is also possible he may have to see a new doctor several times before they will prescribe Xanax for his panic attacks, if then. It is also possible the OP may not be able to find a pharmacist that will fill the Xanax prescription from his old doctor until it is time for the one he got from the new doctor to be filled again.

All but one state has a Prescription Monitoring Programs. Most of the sates are connected to neighboring states.
