    Default Can Self-Employed Business Owners Collect Unemployment

    If a business owner is working for his own business, but it is failing and unable to pay him a decent wage, can he shut down the business and collect unemployment, in Virginia?

    If the business owner is an actual employee of the business, and has been paying unemployment insurance premiums, then he might qualify. However, he risks being denied benefits based upon the determination that his employment ended as the result of his own, voluntary act of closing the business.
