Default Does an Employer Have to Explain Why You are Being Fired

An employee in New York was called to her manager's office, and was told that she was being fired. She asked why and she was told "time misappropriation". She asked what that meant, and the manager refused to give her any further explanation. Does an employer have to tell you why you are being fired, or explain what they mean?

Default Re: Does an Employer Have to Explain Why You are Being Fired

As in most states, an at-will employee in New York may be fired for any reason -- or no reason at all -- as long as the employer is not violating civil rights laws. The employer does not have to provide an explanation of the reasons for termination.
