Default What Should You Do if the Police Want to Talk to Your Child

The police contacted a teenager's parent on a Saturday morning, indicating that they wanted to speak to him about an incident that occurred at his school. The parent asked what happened, and the police would not say. The teen was at the other parent's home, and the police said they would come by to speak with him on Sunday night when he got back from his mother's. What should the parent do?

Default Re: What Should You Do if the Police Want to Talk to Your Child

If the police are working the case over the weekend, and are going to conduct an interview at a minor's home on Sunday night, the parent should assume that the allegations against the teen are very serious. The parent should (a) speak to the teen about what may have happened, (b) postpone any police interview, and (c) consult a criminal defense lawyer who can advise them as to potential charges and if, how and when the minor should agree to speak to the police.
