Default Should a Tenant Sign a Document From the Landlord's Real Estate Agent

A tenant in a small apartment building has been told that the building is up for sale. The seller's real estate agent came by her apartment and asked her to sign a document. The woman declined to sign. Should a real estate agent be talking to tenants, what could the agent be trying to get her to sign, and should she sign anything?

Default Re: Should a Tenant Sign a Document From the Landlord's Real Estate Agent

There is no reason why a real estate agent cannot speak to tenants, but the tenants do not have to speak to the real estate agent.

The agent could be getting the occupant to sign anything -- from a release of liability if items are stolen during showings of the building, through an agreement to vacate the premises if the new owner doesn't want to continue her tenancy -- and I can't think of any document that a real estate agent could be offering that a tenant would want to sign. I don't think she should sign anything that has not been reviewed by a lawyer and, given that lawyer reviews cost money, that is to say I don't think that she should sign anything.
