Default What Will Happen to a 17-Year-Old Shoplifter

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I am going to be completely honest here.

I have been shoplifting alcohol from this Safeway for a while, probably 20 times total. Today, when I was walking out the door with about $40 of alcohol, a manager that recognized me stopped me on the way out when I was still inside the store. He took the bag, and said that he had pictures and that I would get my license taken away for years. Then I just left. Don't think he saw my car, as I parked far away. He didn't try to stop me or keep me there. I'm a minor, 17 years old.

I have a couple of questions.

    1. Will he do anything? Why didn't he keep me there? All my friends that have been caught shoplifting were stopped in the store, detained, and their parents called then and there.

    2. If he did want to screw me over, what's the worst that he could do?

    3. Would this affect me going to college in any way? I'm a senior and I've recieved decisions from some schools, and I'm still in the process of applying to others.

    4. How will this affect my permanent record?

    5. How will this affect my part time job?

    6. If he calls my parents, about how long will he wait to call them? In other words how long do I have to wait until I know that I'm safe?

Please no ethical lectures, I know what I've done wrong and that's not what I'm here for. Thank you so much, as you can imagine I'm pretty worried right now.

When you choose to be a thief, the only person who is "screwing you over" is you.

If the victim of your crime contacted the police with your description and license plate, you may be hearing from the police. Part of the price you pay for choosing to be a criminal is having to worry about getting caught.

In California, a 17-year-old is going to be prosecuted in juvenile court. That doesn't mean that nobody will find out that you're a thief, but it reduces the chances.

I cannot for the life of me imagine how your having to take the consequences for your multiple criminal acts constitutes your "being screwed over".

You will know you are "safe" when the statute of limitations for your crime has expired. I haven't looked up your state but that could be a couple of years.

I like when people tell others what not to respond with. "Please no ethical lectures I know what I did was wrong..." Yeah but you did it 20 times. I love to hear "I know I screwed up" or "I know I've done bad things" and yet people keep doing them.

1). You seriously need new friends.
2). Its really pretty balsy of you to think him calling the police on you for YOU COMMITING A CRIME is somehow screwing you over.
3). If it comes down to accepting you and accepting someone who isn't throwing their life away by stealing booze, which person do you think the college is going to pick?
4). If you are arrested and found guilty, it will go on your record.
5). If your job finds out about it you can be fired.
6). I hope he calls your parents. You need a VERY rude awakening, and your parents finding out is the least of your worries. More than likely, HE won't be calling your parents though. Instead, he will be calling the POLICE, and THEY will be calling your parents.
