Default Can a Debt be Sent to Collections if You're Paying Something Every Month

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Mississippi
I'm paying something every month on a hospital bill (approx $23,000) but due to being unable to work at all (cancer), it's not as much as the hospital would like (around $700 per month for 34 months). Because I'm paying something each month, can they turn me over to a debt collection agency? Thank you.
