Default Protective Services Investigation of a Teen Mother

A seventeen-year-old high school dropout recently had a baby. DCF and protective services were already involved with her family for other reasons, and when they learned about the baby they had questions for the mother and grandmother. They allowed DCF to see the baby, but they said that they weren't going to provide any more information. Somehow DCF found out that the baby had not been to any follow-up appointments after being discharged from the hospital, and they are now seeking information about the name of the child's father, plans for obtaining well baby care, and want to again see the child and review her sleeping arrangements. The family does not want to provide any information, beyond the date of the baby's next doctor visit.

What will happen if the family won't provide additional information, and refuses to let DCF into the house?

If they are sufficiently concerned, they will get a search warrant allowing them to enter the house, and may even open a protective services case for the baby. If the mother has nothing to hide, the best way to end DCF involvement is through cooperation -- and acting as if she has nothing to hide is a path toward unnecessary conflict and intervention. If she has something to hide, she had best consult a lawyer.
