Default What Happens if a Runaway Child is a Witness to a Crime

Two siblings ran away together, with the older sister having committed a battery against her stepfather before they ran away. If the police find the younger sibling, who is twelve, what will they do?

Default Re: What Happens if a Runaway Child is a Witness to a Crime

Depending upon where the child is located, and the full facts of what happened leading up to the children's running away from home, they may (a) return the child to her parents, or (b) involve protective services, and let protective services decide if the child should be returned or if protective proceedings should be initiated.

If the child is a witness to the crime, the police in the jurisdiction in which they battery occurred may want to question the child about the crime -- but the police in a different jurisdiction would almost certainly defer any questioning about the offense to that other police agency.
