Default Rights of a Long-Term Domestic Partner to Stay in a Home

A couple lived together in a home owned by one partner. They did not hold themselves out as married. For the fifteen years that they were together, she told people that she wanted the other partner to stay in the house for the rest of his life if she passed away first. However, she never wrote a will or created a life estate. She passed away and her family has asked that he move out of the home. Does he have any right to remain there?
