Default Can You Be Charged With Theft Over a Missed Loan Payment

If a friend helps you purchase an item, by placing it on their credit card, and you're supposed to make monthly payments, what happens if you miss a payment? The friend says that if a payment is missed, the item must be given to him or he can press charges for theft. Is that correct?
