Default Can a Teenager Be on Welfare Immediately After Moving Out

I live in Alabama and I'm 19. I'm a full time college student and I do have a part time job. The problem is that my mother continually threatens to kick me out of the house and mentions how she wants me to move out, but that's near impossible for me at the moment considering that I only have $400 to my name. I was wondering if there's anyway to get governmental assistance to move out of my parents home if they do ever kick me out? And if no, then when can I apply for welfare once I do move out? I'm ignorant on these issues, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

First, you should be looking for a job.

The following links may help you as to government assistance: http://www.dhr.state.al.us/services/...e/FAQs_FA.aspx

Realistically, unless you can get a lot of refundable financial aid, (which you will not get without your parent's cooperation) if you are not living with your parents you are not going to be able to go to school full time. You will need a full time job to support yourself which means that you will likely be going to school half time.

If your mom kicks you out, see if you can bunk with a friend until the end of the semester, and then figure out what you are going to do after that.

    That certainly is an option.

Without a dependent, you won't qualify for cash assistance. All income is counted for assistance programs. HUD housing often has a waiting list that can be years long for those that are disabled or have families. HUD housing is rarely, if ever in good neighborhoods.

I agree. Welfare doesn't really exist anymore.

Anyone can get food stamps if your income is low, but not cash assistance.

If you are disabled or you have children you may be able to get some assistance.

If you are in school, you may qualify for financial aid - grants or loans. Many people use their financial aid money towards their living expenses.

I believe there is a way to declare yourself independent from your parents, which would probably mean more financial aid. But I'm not sure what the process is or how long it takes.

So, WHY does mom threaten to kick you out? What is it that you are doing - or NOT doing - that has earned her wrath? Perhaps you should consider doing as your mom says until you are able to move out on your own. She is no longer legally obligated to support you - college or not.

cdwjava, that is just what I was thinking.

kit cat, the OP will have to work at least full time to pay basics with financial aid if they aren't living at home. They won't be able to go to school full time and work full time.If they want to continue to receive financial aid, they will need their parents financial info and signature. .

Thank you. I think it may depend on the type of aid you get and the finances of the parents.

But either way, it's probably bad advice on my part, because I think saddling yourself with debt early on in life isn't the best idea.

I looked it up - looks like you have to be over 23 to be an independent student and under 18 to be an emancipated minor, so for someone 19 and unmarried financial aid is going to be tied to parents income.
