Default Was Never Given Last Paycheck from Last Employer

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: california

Upon termination from my previous employer back in July 2016 i was never given my last paycheck and was told that unless i return my uniforms i will not be given my final paycheck. i paid for my uniforms or should i say the costs of them was deducted from my paychecks. Are they allowed to not pay me my final paycheck for this? Also what steps do i need to take to get my final paycheck

Call the DLSE. File a complaint for unpaid wages. The state will figure it out. CA takes this kind of claim VERY seriously.
