Default Contact from a Debt Collector About a Child's Debt

A mother has been contacted by a debt collector about her adult child's debt, and more recently has received a summons at her home. The child moved out several years ago. What should she say to the debt collectors? Should she give them her son's address?

Default Re: Contact from a Debt Collector About a Child's Debt

She can tell them that her child doesn't live at her home, and that they should not contact her again.

The service of a summons indicates that a lawsuit has been filed. She should inform her child of the lawsuit, and give him the court documents. He can then decide if he wants to risk defaulting, answer and defend, or try to negotiate a settlement of the debt.
