Default Can You be Fired for Openly Recording a Conversation at Work

An employee was scheduled for a hearing with H.R. and her manager, and wanted a record of the conversation, so she placed a recording device on the table in plain view and indicated that she wanted to record the meeting. She was told that it was against company policy to record meetings and that if she did not turn off the recorder she would be fired. Can a California employer fire an employee for openly recording a meeting at work?

An employer may forbid recording at work, and may fire an employee for breaking that rule.
