Depending upon the nature and extent of his disability, he may be able to obtain reasonable accommodation or reassignment due to his hand problems. But without more information, it's not possible to know if the problems rise to the level of an ADA-protected disability, or if other work is available within his limitations. If he wants to try to return to work in some capacity, he should request reasonable accommodation and see what his employer offers. He needs to keep in mind that, as his FMLA leave is expired, his employer can tell him at any time that he no longer has a job -- so he'll want to request any accommodation before he loses his job.
If the disability does not rise to the level of an ADA-protected disability, with his FMLA leave exhausted, he should be exploring other potential employment options.
