Default Can an Employer Pay Some Employees Early but Not Others

An employer was seen giving an employee his paycheck a day early. When asked about why that happened, the employee said that he was scheduled for a personal day the next day, and that the employer agreed to give him the paycheck a day early so that he didn't have to drive in to work.

Another employee who was also scheduled to be off the next day requested the same treatment, and the employer said that they needed to wait until the payday to get the check. That's not fair, but is it also illegal?
