    Default Michigan Shoplifting

I worked at a CompUSA in michigan untill last week. I was caught stealing a hard drive. The next day when I went in I had to speak with the head represenitive for loss prevention. He badgered me for about 3 hours about various things and how they had video proof of the theft as well as how I had stolen previously. He also stated that he knew that I was using my employee discount for non-family members. So just to try and make things all good and hopefully try to dodge them contacting the police I admitted to several accounts of discount mis-use. There was a tv that ended up being about $1,200 off with my discount as well as a few other odds and ends that added up to about $1,500. I signed a statement that I would pay restitutions for my STOLEN merchendice. He came back in and said that they would not go to the police if I just paid the $1,500 difference for my discount abuse. He also made up a payment plan of $300 per month until it was paid off. He stated that if I did not show up on a certain day each month to pay that the police would be notified as well as a debt collection agency would be called and how I would end up paying more after court fines and everything and that I would have a felony on my record. Now that im looking at it, I cant afford the $300 each month until I get a new job, which if you live in michigan you know that its pretty bad here. Is there anything that I can do? Can they really do all that stuff to me if I cannot afford to pay them? Thanks in advance for any information!

I'd highly recommend paying this fine and avoiding going to court. Your punishments + fines will be MUCH greater if it does. They certainly do have the right to ask for all of this money, and at least they are giving you the option to pay in smaller incriments. You did after all, take all of this money from them in merchendise.

    Get a paper route.
    work at McDonalds.
Anything to pay it off on time to avoid criminal charges.

Realize that they are actually doing you a big favor.

So they legally can come after me for using my discount for friends even though the purchase was authorized by a manager and the product was technically paid for? I never signed anything stating that they could do this, and I just dont see the legality in charging someone for something like that. The stolen property is one thing (even though they recovered it before I could leave with it) but a product that is paid for and it was authorized by a manager I just cant believe.

Yes in fact because of dollar amount you have committed a felony which is PRISON! I agree it is in your best interest to pay and pay on time!

Prison is highly unlikely, unless there are a lot of aggravating circumstances we don't know about, but this certainly could be charged as a felony based solely on the amout of merchandise you admit to have stolen.

To be clear, in Michigan, you need to be sentenced to more than a year of incarceration before you are remanded to prison, as opposed to jail.

why don't you sell the stuff you got? Afterall, you did afford to buy those items. Sell your electronic equipment around the house. Borrow money from family members? This is not the time to be shy!! You don't have to disclose what it's for, but just say that you'll pay them back as soon as you get a job!

Most importantly, you should really avoid getting a criminal record!

    AND pay it ON TIME!

So then don't pay 'em and see what time it is! I'll give you a hint, it'll be time for the sound of a maglite on your front door about 6am some morning. Could be 7am......6am to 7am is pretty much the usual time the cops come a-knockin' to pick folks up for arrest warrants.

You may wanna stick with what they're offering right now. They're being rather generous!
