Default Can a Fourteen Year Old Move In With a Friend

A friend of my child is fourteen years old, and will soon be fifteen. He lives with his grandmother. He doesn't like it there and wants to move in with us, and we would love to have him. Can we get custody or guardianship?

As a general rule, no. If the child lives with his grandmother based upon an arrangement made by his parents, you can see if his parents will give him permission to live with you.

If grandma is a court-appointed guardian, being unhappy is not sufficient grounds to change guardians, and as a non-relative you're not in a position to intervene. However, in some states a fourteen-year-old may have the right to object to a guardian or suggest an alternative guardian, so you will need to dig into the laws of your state.
