Default Can a Tenant Be Held Liable for Damage Caused by a Water Leak

A tenant was living in a rental property that had a water leak from the shower. Rather than telling the landlord, the tenant did nothing. Many months passed, by which time water damage and rot existed in the wall space, the floor was severely damaged, and a repair that might have been accomplished for a dollar's worth of caulk is going to instead be very expensive. Can the landlord charge the tenant for the cost of repair?
