Default How to Select Categories for Trademark Classification

I am trying to file a trademark application for sporting equipment, but I am confused about trademark categories. Some categories seem to overlap, and some of my searches on the USPTO website produce categories that seem to cover the same items under different names -- e.g. "fishing rods" and "rods for fishing". How do I figure out what categories I should include in my application?

You're probably not going to want to hear this, but if you can't figure out the relevant categories on your own you need to consult a trademark lawyer. Without the details, any online suggestions could leave you without the full protection of your mark.
