    After you retire and start getting Social Security retirement benefits, what happens if you get a job? Can you get retirement benefits while earning an income?

    If you are not yet at full retirement age, earned income may reduce your benefits -- a reduction of $1 for every $2 you earn above the limit. In the year before you reach full retirement age, that changes to a $1 reduction for every $3 earned. If you are at full retirement age, your income will not affect your retirement benefit.
