Default Fraudulently Returning a Used Item to a Store

I bought a dress from Macy's last year and lost the price tag, I only wore the dress for a few hours and it fit weird. The dress is in perfect condition. I wanted to return it but didn't have the price tag. I bought another dress from Macy's recently that was the same price and the same brand. I then sewed that dresses size tag and barcode tag to it so it would match the tag.

I feel so dumb. I went back today to see if I could find the dress and purchase it for peace of mind. It wasn't there. I used my credit card to buy it. Both dresses were $30 on clearance but it was a nice brand.

Will I get arrested? The sewing wasn't that great either. I feel so stressed out.

No, you are not going to get arrested, but I am happy for you that you feel so guilty. That means that you will not be so foolish again. I know that some people do not have any qualms against wearing and then returning clothing, but its a very tacky thing to do, even if the store turns a blind eye. However, if they were going to catch that it was a bad return, they would have done so when they processed the return.

Would this be considered theft? What would happen? I didn't steal anything, just switched and sewed on new tags. The dresses were the same price and the same brand.

You purchased a dress that you kept. You fraudulently altered another item that you returned using the receipt from the item you actually purchased, in order to get your money back. So yes, you did steal something -- the dress you kept despite getting a refund.

How much trouble will I get in? If they see the bad sewing will they use my credit card info to track me? What should I do?

    Nothing.

And sweat it out for a couple of months and if nothing happens by then, you dodged a bullet.

Is it common for Macy's to investigate this? I didn't steal anything...

Well if I could have found the receipt and tag I could have returned the dress. But I couldn't find so I changed the tags...

I bought both dresses at the same Macy's and they were the same price

You are trying to rationalize a criminal act. That's what criminals do.

I suggest you just accept that you did it, learn from the experience, never do it again, and hop this doesn't come back to haunt you.

Should I go into Macy's and tell them everything?

If you want to go to jail...yes. If they have not come after you they probably are not. I highly doubt the Macy's employees are thoroughly examining returned items. I bet it got dumped in a pile and restocked.

How about just do not do dumb crap anymore?
