Angry Replying to a Letter from a Collection Firm After Missing Payments

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California

I am currently in an agreement with a shady law office to pay off a debt. I missed a month or two payments (I thought I was current until I researched my bank records - oy vey) and received a letter today from them. The letter is dated 22 July 2016. Today's date is 27 July 2016. In the letter they say I have five days to respond from the date of the letter or they will file a judgement. How can I respond to a letter in five days, when three days are already on the clock (letter date is 22 July and today is 27 July).

Is this legitimate, meaning the time frame they are giving me?

I have no access to the agreement you signed from where I am sitting, but it sounds like you may have agreed to entry of a confession of judgment if you failed to make the agreed payments. If that's what you chose to do, then the collection firm can take action consistent with that agreement.

If you need to get in touch with the collection firm within the next two business days, consider phone, fax, email, or express mail.

I'm just perplexed it took them this long to send me a notice (almost four months). I thought I was up to date, until I checked my bank records and realized I was behind. I made an express payment to arrive in their office tomorrow.

Calling them is out, because I don't trust them. I'll fax a notice to them and correspond via writing.

Thank you for the response Mr. Knowitall.
