Whether or not they're criminals, I can't say.

But I can speak to the "heroes" part. Trying to "save" a heroine abuser by forcibly removing them from the substance is ignorant. The addict can only get clean if they choose to get clean. The fact that this party loaded a van full of weapons, labeled it a 'rescue mission' and had someone there to document it is far from ignorant. It's disgusting and exploitative. They would have done that addict a much greater and effective service by attending Alanon meetings.
I wish there was a like button because I'd like this till my mouse button broke.

OP: Your buddy and his buddies have a hero complex, at the very least. They are going to get themselves or someone else killed with their showboating antics. They want bail reduction and other mercies? I'm not sure they deserve same in light of all the shootings we've been dealing with in the nation lately. And I say this as a gun owner.

In fact, they were probably also breaking NJ law on the guns....There's no even imaginable excuse for the drugs.
Absolutely breaking NJ law. Simply by traveling with the rifles loaded (regardless of type) is against NJ firearm laws. Not to mention I'm sure several of the magazines they had were also illegal in NJ. The drugs parts has me shaking my head...you claim to be rescuing others from drugs, while possessing drugs yourself. I do believe me friend had no ill-intent and believe he was truly there simply to document the "rescue", be he's probably f*c&#d. Local media is reporting second bail reduction hearing was again denied. he's more of an acquaintance than a friend.

He's more of an acquaintance than a friend. I agree that while they may have had the best intentions, this was absolutely ridiculous and stupid and they should have known better than to do something so stupid. As a gun owner we have to fight to preserve what firearm rights we have left and then you have these asshats making the entire group look bad. And I think you hit another good point about the timing - with what's going on around us, they couldn't have picked a worse time. Wonder if that has an effect in an anti-firearm jurisdiction and wanting to set an example for their stupidity?
