My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: Georgia
Long story short, my younger brother (he is 11 and I'm 23) has been in and out of school for the better part of two years. My mother went to jail and had her license revoked a couple of years ago and since then has bounced around in different living arrangements with her boyfriend and has pulled my brother out of school to "homeschool" him. In the spring, I was contacted by the administrator of the online homeschool program they were using because they had not heard from my mother and were seeking contact. Child Services was investigating their situation last year as well but I fear they have lost contact with her since I barely have any contact or know where she is staying at any given time.
Basically, my understanding is that he has not had a thorough/formal education since the third grade and my concern is on his welfare. I fear if things continue, he is going to be so far behind his peers that he may never catch up. I'm at a loss. I really do not know what to do. I know she does not want to give over guardianship or anything like that and she is struggling to make ends meet but his education is important! Can I contact schools in their area and get him enrolled? Is there a way for him to make up that time he missed and start the grade he needs to next year? What legal repercussions would follow this situation? Is she looking at facing more jail time or losing custody of him for something like this?
Any guidance would be wonderful! Thanks so much!
