Default Accidentally Making Charges on Somebody Else's PayPal Account

My question involves criminal law for the state of:
At the end of last year i bought a couple of things on paypal amounting to about £150 i received these and didnt think anything of it.

About an hour ago i got a call from my mum saying she had just got a letter from someone who i went sailing with for a couple of months last year. the letter said that i had bought these thing on his card and maliciously tried to steal money from his, i was surprised as i haven't heard anything from him since i last saw him about 10 months ago.

the letter says that i also now owe him £300 extra for some legal investigation fees on top of the money from the items i bought on his account?

i managed to talk to him on the phone for a bit when he said that he was getting me back for stealing money from him then he hung up, i have sent him multiple messages saying that i didnt even know that this had happened and i would happily pay back the money but he wont reply?

he gave me his card details to buy some sort of small clamp or something when he was there we bought it together so i havent stolen his card of anything i just didnt check what card i had bought it on.

he currently hasnt got the police involved but he said he will if i dont pay him the full amount of money (fees and price of item).

i just dont understand why he has done this and not contacted me until now with all these fees. its making me think that he is just trying the get loads if money out of me witch is really sad because i thought he was a nice persona and now he is doing this.

He wont reply to me to sort something out so what i want to know is do i have any obligation to pay this £300 legal free that he has asked me for when i have had no idea this is even going on?

    thank, Tom

Firstly, we only deal with US law here.

Secondly, you never noticed the £150 charge didn't hit your account?

Thirdly, why did you put his CC into your Paypal when you were purchasing the clamp/whatever? Why not just pay it directly using the card?

    Default Warning!

You have the option of responding to the letter in writing, denying his accusation, and telling him to leave you alone. Then see how that goes.

Thanks, running a Malwarebytes scans now.

What BS. PayPal doesn't just add CCs. How would they even know the number? Ban this guy.

I don't believe you didn't know that you were charging purchases to his card. It's just that simple. Just pay what you owe.
