Default Verbal Abuse As A Basis For Emancipation

Okay, so here's the deal. I turned 17 in December, and I'm currently residing in Florida. When I was 15 my mom kicked me out and I moved in with my dad who lived in Michigan. We had a great relationship and he was just about to get legal custody of me (I was then 16) when he passed away last July. From there I was forced to move back in with my mother. She picks a fight with me constantly and we RARELY ever get along. I know you normally have to have legal consent to be emancipated, but is there anything I can do to get out of my situation? Living with her is not just not an option anymore. I'm not physically abused, but I'm verbally abused, and no abuse is okay. I'm very depressed all of the time, and my mother doesn't seem to have any compassion. I believe the only reason she wants me to live with her is so she can collect money from my father's death. I need help!

Believe it or not, most teenagers are in conflict with one or both of their parents.....it's part of growing up. For that reason, from what I've learned from this forum, legal emancipation is difficult if not impossible to obtain. Try making the best of things and try to see your mom's perspective of your relationship.....compassion works both ways.

Most of all, though, I want to tell you how very sorry I am about your father's passing. That is very difficult at any age, much less at 16. You are grieving, so that makes you much much more sensitive. Hang in there.....I hope it gets easier for you.

Florida's emancipation law requires your parent to initiate the emancipation process.
