Default Not Detained for Shoplifting, but Probably Caught on Camera

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

Hi, before I start I realize how incredibly stupid my decisions were. I am never going to get rid of this sinking feeling in me and personally I do not want it to so it can serve as a reminder to me to never make decisions that could possibly cost me my future ever again. I do not plan on ever going into another one of their stores ever again.

The store I am referring to is Sephora. I have heard many stories of shoplifters caught there and being taken to court, so I am extremely paranoid and would not be surprised if I become one of these stories. What I had taken were a couple items (all adding to about less than $150). When I had gone there, an SA was incredibly suspicious of me and constantly offering me a basket. I should have bolted when this happened but, being stupid, I didn't. I quickly realized that they were on to me. So reactively, I had gone up to the SA suspicious of me, asked her to tell me the price of an item, and then went in line to pay for it. I had to use my PP debit card because I had not brought any cash with me. While being rung up, the manager (presumably) was behind the counter and had asked me if I didn't want one of the items I had taken anymore (a $20 beauty blender). I said no and when she asked where I had set it I pointed her to a random direction of the store. They let me walk out. But I had walked out leaving them with my PP debit card info in their system and (if Sephora cameras are as good as everyone says they are these days) footage of me taking the item and never putting it back. I think the SA and the manager let me walk out because they were not 100% sure I had stolen something. But still...

I am not asking for what I should have done in that situation (because unfortunately for me what's done is done), but please give me some of your insight/knowledge/experience on the situation. Will Sephora use their time and money to take me to court?

Thank you for responding, but can you give me more than "only time will tell"?

It means they can pursue this. Whether or not they will, nobody here can tell you. No one on these forums is a fortune teller.

This living in fear day to day, hour to hour, for stealing something - try to harness this next time you get the urge. It's an unpleasant side effect of doing something you know is morally wrong. No one can answer your question. Maybe they will pursue it. Maybe they won't. No one can even guess.
