Default Getting a Social Security Number As Adult for the First Time

    Hello.

This is a pretty simple story with complicated issues. Ill be brief. I was born in 1983 in Los Angeles CA. My parents were hippies who objected to the SSN and birth reporting rules so they didn't register me or my sister born 2 years later (neither if us knew this fact until 2015). My mother died in 1987. I was raised by my aunt but never adopted. My father passed away in 2011. My Aunt TOLD me my social security number and I had used it as my social since I was 18. I used it to get my job, see doctors, go to college at UCLA and file taxes and get a CA Identification card. It wasn't until my wallet was stolen in December 2015 that I stated to have issues. I went to renew my CA Identification and the DMV said my SSN didn't verify and refused my replacement. So I went to the Social Security Office to get a copy of my card. They had no record of my SSN on file and said I had been suing a NEVER ISSUED SSN. They said I would have to return with my aunt, birth certificate and an ID and they would issue me a correct SSN. There was no record of my birth at the CA office of Vital Statistics but luckily I was baptized at a church and had records of my baptism as well as school records and doctors records. This combined with statements from my aunt who was present at the birth It has been enough to have a judge issue me a delayed registration of birth so I have a birth certificate. I went to the DMV and they have issued me a new CA ID but it will take 6 weeks to get in the mail. In the mean time I have the temporary paper. I went to the SSO and presented with all of this and I was told I would receive an SSN no problem. Turns out that was not correct. On Friday, 3 days after all of this was submitted I received a letter in the mail stating they could not issue me a SSN as they could not verify my identity and my citizenship. I called them and they said I could submit more evidence and they would review. This is all very very very confusing and frustraing. What can I do???

Did you submit an application for an SSN prior to receiving the official birth certificate? Could that letter be in response to something you did prior? Three days is extraordinarily fast to get a letter stating that your evidence was insufficient...bordering on impossible. Think about It? If we are talking about three days then you submitted your information on a Tuesday, were told that it was all good, and then someone had to review it, determine that it was NOT all good, and then draft a letter and get it in the mail in time for you to receive a Friday delivery. Look at the date on the letter that you received.

Thankyou for your response IIworking. I had never filled out a SS5 application until last Monday. I went to Social Security Office on Monday May 30th and met with Susan. I was there for 2 hours and explained the situation. Handed her all the documents and she said that it was all sufficient in her opinion. On Friday June 3rd, I received the letter dated June 1st denying my request and asking for further evidence for review from every year I have lived. I have given them every piece of information I could possibly include.

See what else you can provide...old report cards, moments from your childhood, anything else that you can come up with.
