It wasn't upon deep research. I simple searched are bitcoin casinos legal, and that search popped up.

If that is the case, then I can accept that running a bitcoin casino is the same as a normal one. If so, what sort of certification would I need to legally run an online casino?

Seriously, if you believe yourself to be even slightly positioned to start a casino, you need to take some of the millions of dollars that you have in your bank account and hire a team of lawyers to guide you through the legal and regulatory processes of every jurisdiction in which you hope to conduct business.

My understanding of the law for online casinos in the US is that it is only legal if there is a physical casino licensed in a state where the online casino is an extension of that physical location.

I don't think millions will do it. Try it with a "B".

The Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, NJ recently went live online.

There are Federal laws and state laws in play. Three states, Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware, will license online casinos (this is regulated over and above the B&M casino rules). Federal law prohibits any online (or other telecommunications use) for sports wagering. There are a few states (Louisiana, Oklahoma, Washington...) that bar online gambling so if you do operate an otherwise legal casino it is best you block users from these states (and stay out of the states personally). Ther have also been state actions to prosecute adverstisments for online gambling. Then you've got the federal ban on providing any banking service for online gambling that was otherwise illegal. Further there's the Kentucky seizure of domain names (probably bogus, but still up in the air).

So you've got a minefield of state and federal laws (and possibly those in whatever country you're going to operate your servers or use for your bitcoin transactions). You're going to need an experience attoreny versed in these things. You're not getting there with asking questions on this forum.
