The child name cannot be changed through SSA. You will need to send a copy of the court orders to North Carolina. When you get a copy of the changed birth certificate, you can take that to SSA for them to change it on his social security number.

    As you can read here,
Quote Quoting Court-Ordered Name Changes (919-792-5985)
An amended birth certificate reflecting a name change ordered by the courts may be processed for individuals who are born in North Carolina. Please complete the birth certificate application form providing the information to locate the original birth certificate. You must include a certified copy of the name change court order along with your request. There is a fee of $15 to process the name change, an additional charge of $24 for the first copy of the requested certificate, and $15 more for each additional copy of the same certificate. There are charges for faster service.

Yes, any time you change a name, be it by court order or by marriage or whatever, it behooves you while you are at the courthouse anyhow to get some extra true copies of the paperwork. Vital records, Social Security, the DMV, your bank, will want to see them and in some cases retain them. When I got married the clerk gave me that piece of advice and I've pretty much used up all ten copies I've gotten over the years (The FAA was the last agency I had to deal with even though we've been married for twenty years. My wife needs the last one to file for her federal retirement).
