My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: North Carolina
I broke my lease 2 months early, due to dangerous neighbors dealing drugs, using drugs and threatening us. I reported this to management at least 30 times but they never did anything about it. I also called the police, but they never caught them doing any of it. Then they threatened our lives if we called again. I gave management 2 months notice that I would be leaving. I know that they can charge me rent if I break the lease early. Once I left, they had new tenants in there before the end of the month. I left and paid for up to the end of February, at the end of March someone was already renting the place. I know I owe the rent for March, but I know I should not be charged after that as the apartments should not be collecting rent from 2 people. I have tried to contact them at least 6 times and they refuse to get back to me. I have told them I am aware that the place is rented and would like to talk about what I owe. I have also contacted their main office and no one will get back to me either. I received a letter today from a collection company charging me for the months left on the lease. This after I contacted management over and over wanting to discuss what I owe, and that I should not being charged rent for the time they already rented it. Now I owe a collection agency, and I have no idea whom I can contact to get this straight. I have also contacted an attorney and he is $375 an hour, and as he said it would cost much more to hire him than it would to be to pay off what they claim that I owe. What do I do to find a way to show that I do not owe that money and not get it on my credit report, when no one will talk to me?
