Default Can You Be Charged Rent After Breaking a Lease Once New Tenants Move In

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: North Carolina
I broke my lease 2 months early, due to dangerous neighbors dealing drugs, using drugs and threatening us. I reported this to management at least 30 times but they never did anything about it. I also called the police, but they never caught them doing any of it. Then they threatened our lives if we called again. I gave management 2 months notice that I would be leaving. I know that they can charge me rent if I break the lease early. Once I left, they had new tenants in there before the end of the month. I left and paid for up to the end of February, at the end of March someone was already renting the place. I know I owe the rent for March, but I know I should not be charged after that as the apartments should not be collecting rent from 2 people. I have tried to contact them at least 6 times and they refuse to get back to me. I have told them I am aware that the place is rented and would like to talk about what I owe. I have also contacted their main office and no one will get back to me either. I received a letter today from a collection company charging me for the months left on the lease. This after I contacted management over and over wanting to discuss what I owe, and that I should not being charged rent for the time they already rented it. Now I owe a collection agency, and I have no idea whom I can contact to get this straight. I have also contacted an attorney and he is $375 an hour, and as he said it would cost much more to hire him than it would to be to pay off what they claim that I owe. What do I do to find a way to show that I do not owe that money and not get it on my credit report, when no one will talk to me?

Call the collection agency and offer to send the collector a check promptly for the one month you do owe but nothing more as you don't owe for the time starting when the other tenants took over but only if the collection agency will agree that this will be full payment of everything owed and that no delinquency will be reported to the credit bureaus and see what the collection agency says. Chances are they will simply take the deal since if they or the landlord sued you they’d get nothing more than that and they should know it. Make sure they send you confirmation in writing before you pay it that the payment will fully satisfy what you owe, and when you send in the payment enclose a copy of that agreement.
