Can You Be Required to Pay Tuition for a Semester You Did Not Complete

Hello,

I was a full time student in medical school. Unfortunately, due to my family issues, I failed the course in the middle of the second semester, and I got reinstated as a first year student. After coming back, I was doing well at school, but in my second semester, I failed one course again, and I got dismissed from the program. I asked for a chance to let me stay in school but nobody even responded to my emails, dean refused to talk to me. According to the school policy students who repeat a year, are not qualified for the remediation or appeal. So I owe almost two year tuition fee in federal loans, and never even finished my first year. I have a direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans in the amount of $121000+.
Now, school wants me to pay rest of $12000 tuition fee, that was refunded back to my borrower, after my dismissal.
So they dismissed me from school, but they still want me to pay for the classes that I never took.
I have no income, no degree to find a job, and no savings to pay that debt.
Is there any chance to avoid that $12000 school debt?

You chose not to follow the instruction to identify your state, although the gist is going to be the same. When you enroll in school, you enter into a contract with the school to receive your classes in exchange for your payment of tuition. Schools will have a schedule for dropping classes or dropping out of a program, pursuant to which you can receive a full refund, partial refund, or no refund depending upon when you withdraw. If you fail to withdraw before you reach the final deadline, such that you remain contractually obligated to pay the full tuition despite not attending the classes, that contract is enforceable.

In terms of avoiding tuition debt, as opposed to guaranteed student loans, depending on your other debt load you may want to consult a bankruptcy lawyer.

My institution is in NY, Long Island.
I don't know what you mean by deadline. This school has several courses each semester I needed to pass. So I passed everything in first semester, then I passed first course in my second semester(it was the neuroscience, the longest and most difficult course in medical school). Who could think that I could fail the next course(much easier than neuro).
Anyways, Greatlakes, the borrower of federal loans got refund after I got dismissed. This was tuition fee for the rest of courses that I was suppose to take. Now school wants me to pay that $12000. It doesn't make sense. If that amount needed to be payed why would they refund it? I could owe in federal loans little more and that would be the end of the story.
