    Default Naturalization and Step-Parent Adoption

My wife of over 5 years wants to become a naturalized citizen of the US. In addition, I want to do a step-parent adoption of her child who was born prior to our marriage. Should we do one of these before the other, or would it be feasible to have both in process at the same time?

Default Re: Naturalization and Step-Parent Adoption

The adoption is a state law matter that must proceed through the state courts. You can also explore the possibility of stepparent adoption under the laws of your wife's nation of origin, depending upon the full facts of the situation and the laws of that nation.

Naturalization is a federal matter, and you cannot accomplish a stepparent adoption through a naturalization proceeding.
