Question Should You Tell a Store's LP Officers That Somebody is Stealing

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas

I know someone that constantly steals from a local Walmart. He gets away with stealing about 75-100 dollars a week(years according to him/he brags about it) by using the self checkout. I've seen him do this in person and he never gets caught. I was wondering if I should notify the stores LP manager so they can look him up on the cameras. I could tell them a few days in which he has done this, but they also could check years old footage since he steals there a lot. I usually wouldn't get involved but this person has gotten me into trouble with the law, so I'm thinking about returning the favor.

My question is, if I did notify Walmarts Loss Prevention officers, would I be able to remain anonymous when they catch him. If I tell them to not to include my name, they should respect that right?

They don't have to keep your name out of it and may not be able to if they catch him based on your information, then it winds up in court. If you give them enough information, they may be able to nab him independently and keep you out of it entirely. Something as simple as calling them and telling them when he goes into the store to steal. Or just don't give them your name.

If you were there when he was stealing and they find that on video, they may try to charge you as an accomplice depending on your actions. Best just to give them a heads up anonymously when he goes there to steal. Assuming they have someone from LP on duty, they can watch him.

So I can can just call them and say that a certain man(description) is going to the Walmart today and he is going to steal a few things? I guess as long as I just call instead of going in person to tell them, I can remain anonymous.

There's no telling if they would take it seriously or not. I would have thought someone was either a. playing a joke on their friend, b. trying to scope out store LP or c. actually serious. They might watch him for a little while but depending on how good he is, they may lose interest and move on while thinking a or b above.

They may take your anonymous tip and watch the described person, just simply because there's usually some fire where there is smoke. And you know what? They are supposed to be watching people anyhow, so why not watch the one who has been reported--AND if possible, the person who reported him, or the people he comes in with? In fraud prevention, it seems to happen that sometimes people who are stealing will actually call and report their friends or people they are going to be with for stealing, with the idea that if we're watching the person with them, we won't notice it's been THEM who was stealing.

What they will NOT do is give you any kudos for calling in (they're not Crimestoppers, you know) and they will never tell you and you will never find out what the result of the investigation may be unless this so called friend of yours tells you. (Or you brag to him.)I know you are just envisioning the moment when he is hauled away, and you can gloat, "Gotcha!" back at him. But it won't likely happen that way. They'll appreciate the heads up, but it's not such a big deal, they won't take it that seriously. Your testimony alone is not going to get him prosecuted. Skeevy people make a pastime of calling up and reporting each other for crimes when they're mad at each other.

You should probably call in an anonymous tip to the store and then stop hanging out with this person. How do you even steal things from self-checkout? I thought most stores - especially Walmart - had the detector things at the door that beep when unpaid merchandise goes through.

I would have made an anonymous tip after the first time I saw a 'friend' do this. That is crazy.

You are clueless. I won't say how it is done because I won't aid and abet but you have no idea. NONE.

Apparently I am clueless because I do not steal from stores or any place or any person. I am not sure why you are being condescending about it. It just boggles my mind that it would be done but I suppose if I thought about it I could figure it out but why waste my time on that? I am glad I have "no idea...NONE" about how to steal stuff.

I still think my statement that they need to find new friends and should have reported it right away is pretty valid.

Don't be any where near him,he gonna get caught eventually either at Walmart or somewhere else. He gonna get too comfortable or eventually his luck is gonna run out.
