My question involves criminal law for the state of: Oklahoma/North Carolina
I have a question regarding interstate text message harassment. I live in Oklahoma, and my ex (and father of my child) lives in North Carolina. The day before yesterday, he sent me three very violent and threatening text messages, specifically describing how he would kill me. Perhaps what is most ironic, is that he sent these text messages to me after discovering that I sent a private message to his fiance, warning her that he (my ex) was a very violent and dangerous man. This fiancee lives in North Carolina, and he resides with her.
A little background on my ex and our tumultuous relationship:
We were never married, and have one child together. He has prior convictions for domestic violence and for threatening the life of a public official (a judge), as well as a previous charge (that was later dismissed) for the possession of a weapon during a violent crime. In 2014 I filed a police report in the state of South Carolina (where I was living at the time) for criminal sexual misconduct against him. I chose not to go through the process of pressing charges, but I still have a copy of this report. During that time, I was also given a 6 month restraining order against my ex because of the criminal sexual misconduct, as well as temporary custody of our son. This order and the temporary custody agreement have been expired for a little over a year (since May 2015). After staying in a shelter for abused women for a short time, I moved back to my home state of Oklahoma with our son. There is no current custody agreement in place for our son.
After I received these text messages, I did not respond to them. I deleted them from my phone but was able to retrieve them from my computer thanks to a software program and printed them off. Today I went to my local police station here in Oklahoma and filed a police report, including these texts as evidence along with the report. I plan to go to my local district court next week to obtain another restraining order even though my ex lives in another state. I fear that he will make good on these threats, and I want to protect myself.
My question is, what else should I be doing in regards to this matter, besides filing a police report and getting a restraining order? Will anything come of this, seeing as how my ex lives in another state, and not within the same city? Currently I have installed two separate apps on my phone that will block any further incoming SMS or calls from him. I don't want to change my phone number because honestly, it would be too much of a hassle to give this new phone number to my son's doctor, therapists, school, etc., and I am in the process of applying for new jobs, and I've already applied for quite a few jobs with the number I have now. I tried looking online for specific information regarding interstate text message harassment, but the results were few and far in between.
