Post Can You Be Charged for Removing Alarm Stickers from Merchandise

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Montana.

While at Walmart, I was confronted by a supervisor for tearing off corners of earring sheets which had the alarm stickers. She told me to leave all the items in the cart and leave the store immediately, and not to return. While getting in my vehicle, she wrote my license plate number down.

Can I be charged with shoplifting, even though I did not leave the store with items?

Potentially. If what you were doing was part of an act to conceal the property in order to steal them than that act of concealment may be sufficient to complete the theft crime; walking out of the store would not be necessary to commit the crime. The store may also sue you for the damage done to the merchandise, too.
