    Default Squealing Tires Ticket

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Washington

I got a speeding ticket. I was mean to the cop (I know i shouldn't have been and that i probably screwed myself essentially) but i turned to leave and since I was a rude to him he was like 'your tires just squealed -- expect another ticket in the mail.' I do believe he did this because I was mean with him. I am wondering - how screwed am I? I'm worried that he will give me the max amount to pay and I dont have much money to begin with. Its not that I accelerated too fast its that I turned too fast so my tires squealed.

So, what steps should I take?

Did you get the ticket yet?

Anyhow the standard answer is you follow the guidance in the stickied "Procedural Guide to Washington State" thread to request discovery and a contested hearing. Post the ticket (redacted) and the officer's sworn statement here and see what people can pick over.

The cop doesn't set the fine amount. As mentioned, you really can't do much until and unless you get something in the mail. You might want to write down some notes about what was said or done by the two of you during the stop.

You don't deny squealing your tires which makes me think you probably did and it's not something he made up. You might be right about his motivation in citing you for a second time, if that happens, but that's really not related to your guilt or the lack thereof. You might want to start saving some money.

I don't know if you'd thought about this but cops are humans and they react and act in some ways like other people do. That's why it's best to be courteous and not to do and say stupid stuff that will make you stand out in their minds. Even if you hadn't inspired the second ticket, you probably increased his level of diligence in the process enough to make conviction on the first offense even more likely than normal.

So…You were stopped for speeding, given a speeding citation, and released from the stop by the cop. Then, after the cop released you, you accelerated and turned a corner so that the tires squealed. And the cop was still able to tell you to expect a second citation in the mail? Did the cop run alongside your car as you were speeding away, was he screaming his head off, or did he have your cell number??? I’m just not getting a mental image of how this went down.

Any-who, the squealing tires could result in a couple of different charges. The most likely (especially considering your admitted ‘tude to the cop) would be negligent driving in the second degree…if the cop actually issues the cite and mails it to you. For neg-2 you can expect about $500 fine if found guilty.

    Pretty close. It's $550.
