The company claimed that they could not change the ticket so they cancelled it and now have to buy a new one for whoever takes her place. So even if she gets stuck with the bill, there would be no ticket to show for it.

why wasn't this ticket simply refundable? This far out (5-6 months) I can't see why it would not be refundable. I don't deal with airline tickets much but any non-refundable ticket I have dealt with could at least be exchanged in some way. There may be a fee or such but it was able to be used still.

while there could be something where she committed herself to going which they depended on to purchase the ticket for her (ya know, like awhile before they purchased it they said; anybody not going to the annual whatever?) They might have an arguable point that they relied on her commitment to purchase the ticket for her BUT...

even if she did;

they cannot charge her for the ticket and keep it or return it. It would be her ticket. They screwed the pooch on that one by cancelling it.
if they made it non-refundable and they determined the rules in whether the travel insurance covers it or not, well, shame on them. In other words; they had complete control over every aspect of the ticket and as such, if they painted themselves into a corner, it's their fault.

even if they could hold her to paying for something, it would be limited to their damages AND they would have an obligation to mitigate their damages.

I agree with the others: if they sue, deal with it. Otherwise; move on.

that does bring up why you are asking now. She has been gone from there for a few months and its a month or so until the trip. Did they just hit her up recently about it or something?

and yes, trying to get her to sign the promissory note was them trying to loop her into paying for it. It's good she rejected it.
