    Default Homeowner's Insurance Cancellation After a Break-In

My question involves insurance law for the state of: california

in 1 year span we had a car break in and the financial loss was large. 1st time was $2800 in loss and 2nd time was $3900 in loss equipment stolen.

farmers insurance paid the amount and is now cancelling our policy after 20 years and this is our first 2 claims. What do we do? A notice was sent stating they will be cancelling our policy effective in march.

I think that you start shopping for another insurer.

That's called "non-renewal." You've become a high risk insured by having two of the same kind of claims in one policy year.

You've got at least a month. Check with your Farmers agent and see if Farmers will reconsider keeping you in exchange for a higher deductible or a theft exclusion. If not, see if the Farmers agent has access to an insurance company that writes high risk insureds. If not, then contact a local independent insurance agent who represents many companies. One way or another, you'll be able to get a new policy, you'll just pay a lot more for it and you may still end up with a high deductible and/or theft limitations.

Make sure you give this priority and get a replacement policy ASAP, especially if your mortgage company impounds for insurance as part of your monthly payment. Call them now and find out what the procedure is for changing insurance companies.

Meantime, stop leaving valuables in your vehicle or it's guaranteed to happen again.
